Valentine was a celibate priest martyred in Rome in 269. One story describes Valentine healing the blindness of his jailer’s daughter, and sending her a note from prison signed simply, ‘Your Valentine’.
In light of this my poem describes the beauty of love and compassion today on Valentine’s Day.
The gift of love is rich & deep
Like a colourful tapestry woven in kindness
Each thread intentionally stitched
To create a glorious image of humanity
Despite a random criss cross of threads connecting underneath
The gift of empathy is soft & gentle
Like a perfect rosebud unfurling gracefully
To reveal its hidden beauty
Ruffles of petals perfectly formed
Whilst releasing a sweet fragrance
